Plant layout or factory layout is an area under constant scrutiny by factory managers. Plant layout consists of cutting room layout, sewing room layout and finishing room layout. Although all departments are equally important, sewing room layout gets maximum attention. Two rows of sewing machine and centre table in-between is a common view in almost all factories. The origin of centre table is not known but it is probably meant to solve two problems together: to provide a cover to electrical wiring and also to act as material storage/transfer facility. However, sewing machines without centre table are also common these days and sewing machines with overhead material hanging system are increasingly becoming popular. During mid 80’s, there were some factories with conveyors (in place of centre table) in-between two rows of machines, but today motorized conveyors are no longer in existence. ..

Technological Answers to the Challenges in the Apparel Sector

High-tech production machines and sophisticated organizations including the supporting IT can speed up the lead time in the apparel sector. This and so-called green technologies were the focus of IMB World of Textile Processing, the leading trade exhibition in apparel technologies worldwide, held in Cologne, Germany from 20 to 24 April 2009, Deepak Mohindra, Editor-in-Chief, StitchWorld and Claudia Ollenhauer-Ries report.

Sustainability is the buzzword….be it retail or manufacturing. Every one is going all out to woo the customer by showcasing their sustainability efforts. IMB was no different. All participating companies displayed machines built under environment-friendly conditions. Also, while in use they consume less energy. But at the end who is paying the price of the increased cost…? It is the supplier companies in the developing economies. It’s a double whammy situation; on the one hand retailers in the EU and the US say that consumers in their countries are not ready to pay more for sustainable goods though they want it, and they themselves, unwilling to share the burden of extra cost with their suppliers, are

Imagine an aircraft with a price tag 15% lower but fuel consumption 50% higher than its newer competitors. You are right; no airline would buy it any more. But in an equivalent situation, many textile industrialists still stick with the old technology. Poor accounting prowess and cost awareness still leads to investment in superficially cheap dyeing equipment that will preclude massive cost-savings. Smart dyers everywhere, of course, have already discovered that either Governmental pressure over pollution or increasing consumer demand for ethically and environmentally sound garments has, in fact, essentially forced them to dramatically lower operating costs via state-of-the-art dyeing machinery.
